Zografia Karekou was born and raised in Athens.
With studies in architecture (first degree, Patras 2000-2006), urban planning (2008) and monument protection (2018) she has worked as an architect, urban planner, researcher, monument restorer, graphic designer, animator of participatory design workshops, craftswoman-builder, trainer in natural building and traditional techniques workshops and finally, a ceramist.
In Almas Ceramics Studio, her work lives and develops. Utility and sculptural clay objects are designed and made to order. Each ceramic object has its own “soul” (alma)!
Stoneware is high temperature clay. The objects are fired at 1260 C to 1280 C creating a solid mass of clay, very durable, which has become like stone.
The objects are fired in a gas kiln, where the chamber atmosphere is slightly reducing. The fire and smoke present in the kiln give a unique effect to the final form of the objects.
